Using Auditors to Boost Government Performance
Auditors - they're not always loved by top managers and mayors, but local government auditors can be key contributors to high performing government. The right auditor with the right attitude can help managers and mayors keep governments focused on efficient, effective government without playing "gotcha."
Listen to a fascinating hour's conversation in which Jonathan Walters talks with Kansas City Mayor Mark Funkhouser, Steve Morgan, the long-time auditor for Austin, Texas, and David Corliss, city manager for Lawrence, Kansas. Funkhouser was elected mayor of Kansas City, Missouri, after spending more than 20 years as the city's auditor. Now in his second year as mayor, he talks about how auditors, elected executives and top managers can better work together. Morgan is a veteran auditor who has worked with a wide variety of mayors and administrators. And Corliss is city manager in a city that has only recently added the position of auditor to its organizational chart.
Together the three discuss how to build positive working relationships between the auditor's shop and the rest of local government. You'll learn how the auditors' role has evolved, in some cities, from the 'green eyeshade' days to becoming active partners in improving how government works, as well as how to work strategically with auditors to enhance and improve government operations.
