Posted Feb. 4, 2004 Governing, Stateline.org WASHINGTON, D.C. Reporters Dan Egan and Lee Bergquist of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel are the winners of the first Hal Hovey Award, established by Governing Magazines and Stateline.org to honor outstanding journalistic coverage of state and local government. Egan, a feature writer, and Bergquist, an environmental beat reporter, teamed to produce a three-part series in late 2003 called Troubled Waters, documenting the inequities and shortages that are coming to plague water systems in communities all around the country, including many that dont yet realize they have a problem. Painstakingly researched and crisply written, the series provides a model for how daily journalism can explain complex issues in a way that captures the immediate attention of almost any reader. The award, which includes a $3,000 cash grant, was presented Feb. 4 at Governings annual Outlook in the States conference here. Ohio Governor Bob Taft was the featured speaker at the conference. The award is named in memory of the late Hal Hovey, a dedicated public official, meticulous scholar, tireless reporter and constructive critic of state and local government, who died in 1999 after a 30-year career that included major contributions to both journalism and public service at all levels.
