The latest federal data indicate that 32.675 traffic fatalities occurred nationwide in 2014. While the number of fatal accidents has changed little in recent years, it's down from more than 40,000 just a decade ago.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported the following traffic fatality statistics for 2014:
- 21,022 passenger-vehicle occupants were killed
- 4,884 pedestrians were killed
- 4,586 motorcyclists were killed
- 726 cyclists were killed
Between 2013 and 2014, Vermont and New Hampshire experienced notable declines. Wyoming and New Mexico were among states experiencing large increases in traffic fatalities.
