Change You Can Click On
When we founded Governing more than 20 years ago, our intentions were simple: "to provide the best journalism we can, presented as attractively as possible." That was how I put it in a 1987 prototype of our monthly magazine.
Translating those plans on to our Web site, especially when it comes to presenting our journalism, is an ongoing process.
Since the last major overhaul of Governing.com in 2005, we have added many features to our site, including several that debuted over just the past year. Ballot Box, for example, is a new state and local politics blog. We also launched an online-only version of the State & Local Sourcebook, and two new well-read e-mail newsletters on management and technology.

The design that we are starting to unveil this week, the sixth major rendition of the site since it was launched 12 years ago (the original home page is shown at the right), provides significantly more space to showcase and share our work both our online-only features and the columns and articles from the magazine. It also makes finding information about our popular conferences, workshops and interactive webinars easier. Most important, we are making room to grow. And we do indeed have big plans for continuing to expand the ways we use our Web pages to talk about policy-making, politics and the business of government at the state and local level.
Redesigning a Web site that is as in-depth as ours is not an overnight process, so you will see changes to our look and feel rolling out across our site over the next several weeks. Please excuse the dust as we put the finishing touches on these extensive renovations and tell us what you think at mailbox@governing.com. Your feedback is always welcome.
