Today's Newark Star-Ledger reports the state's Division of Fish and Wildlife is trying to decide if it has the authority to regulate the food and trash management practices of some summer camps that it says are "jeopardizing the safety of the children in their care." In several instances this summer, black bears have chased campers or entered their sleeping quarters. Officials visit camp sites annually but say that a few have been ignoring their recommendations and warnings for years.
Photo-crazed tourists at Yellowstone continue to climb where they shouldn't and break other rules, but even they seem to finally have gotten the message, "A fed bear is a dead bear." How appalling that some outdoor camp directors don't take it seriously.
