Contributor

Former Vermont Gov. Jim Douglas serves on the board of directors of The Hunt Institute, which aims to mobilize strategic action to transform public education, and is a member of the advisory board for the Hunt-Kean Leadership Fellows program. He is an executive in residence at Middlebury College.

Douglas, a Republican, was first elected as Vermont's governor in 2002 and served four two-year terms. Previously, he served as state treasurer, secretary of state and majority leader of the state House of Representatives. He is a former chairman of the National Governors Association and former president of the Council of State Governments.

Federal help is needed now to reopen schools safely and address educational gaps. But for the long term, K-12 education needs to become more financially efficient and prioritize equity.
