The school year in which school meals would be required to adhere to new limits on added sugar under a proposed set of dietary guidelines for school meals. By the fall of 2027, added sugars in school meals would be limited to less than 10 percent of the total calories per week for breakfasts and lunches. The school meal program currently serves breakfast and lunch to approximately 15 million and 30 million children daily during breakfast and lunch, respectively.
