The number of pounds of trash produced daily by New Yorkers, the majority of which just ends up in a plastic bag on the sidewalk. But the city is now working to containerize its trash and began requiring food-related businesses to place all waste in lidded, hard-sided containers in August. The regulations expanded to large chain companies in September and, by the end of next year, all businesses and smaller residential buildings will be held to the same rules.
