Jacqueline S. Salit is a professor of practice at Arizona State University, where she co-directs the ASU Center for an Independent and Sustainable Democracy. She is a co-founder of IndependentVoting.org, a national nonprofit that represents the 45 percent-plus of American voters who choose not to identify with a political party. She is also a member of the Board of Advisors of the USC Schwarzenegger Institute.

Salit is a 40-year veteran of the independent-voting movement, playing vital roles in groundbreaking independent presidential campaigns while bringing litigation and legislation on behalf of independent voters and candidates. She ran the Independence Party segment of Michael Bloomberg’s three successful New York mayoral campaigns.

Salit is the author of Independents Rising and co-author with Thom Reilly and Omar Ali of The Independent Voter.

They split their tickets in last year’s elections more than they have in the past, and they were more likely to identify as moderates. It’s cause for optimism.
