A conservative estimate of the amount of extra credit card debt that New Yorkers ran up as a result of the smoke that reached the city from Canadian wildfires last year.

Researchers at the Dallas and Philadelphia Federal Reserve banks and the UCLA Anderson School of Management found that people exposed to wildfire smoke usually go deeper into credit card debt, mostly due to medical bills as well as from spending on air purifiers, air conditioners and masks.
