The number of gigawatts that Texas will need to generate by 2030, according to the Electric Reliability Council of Texas. That would be nearly double the 85 gigawatts consumed last year, which was a record driven by the state’s hottest year ever. Increased consumption is coming from data centers powering artificial intelligence and crypto currency mining, which can sometimes top usage of entire cities. But more than a third of the forecast growth is coming from oil and gas operators switching from gas and diesel to electricity.
