450,000

The number of barred owls that will be killed over the next three decades in an effort to save the spotted owl from potential extinction.

The barred owls have encroached into the West Coast territory of two owls, northern spotted owls and California spotted owls, which have been unable to compete with the invasive species due to the barred owls’ large broods and need for less room. Since 2009, about 4,500 barred owls have already been removed from spotted owl habitats.
