The number of species of freshwater mussels in Texas listed as endangered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on Monday, June 3. Sometimes called “the liver of the river” because they filter out harmful substances from water, these once-abundant species have declined due to population growth and development in and near their habitats.
