The amount Texas would have had to shell out last year — more than half of the $144 billion lawmakers allocated for the state's current two-year budget — to cover the cost of eliminating all property taxes collected by school districts, cities, counties and special taxing districts, according to the state's Legislative Budget Board. Republican lawmakers have been on a yearslong push to bring down the state’s property taxes, among the highest in the nation.
