The number of deaths during the week of July 7-13 that Maricopa County health officials are investigating for potentially being the result of extreme heat.
The county was the fastest-growing in the nation in 2022, but dropped to fourth in 2023. Phoenix, the county seat, is the hottest city in the nation. Drug or alcohol use, both of which can cause dehydration, were factors in most of the suspected fatalities.
