In 2013, the state of New York announced a plan to co-locate its primary data center at the State University of New York’s College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering in Albany. The state has consolidated 20 agency data centers — out of an eventual 50 — into the co-located facility so far, says New York CTO Rajiv Rao. The move is dramatically lowering power consumption, and it puts the state data center at the heart of microprocessor research and development. In an interview during Government Technology’s New York Digital Government Summit, Rao described how co-locating at the university research center gives the state access to some of the latest computing technology.
